Most of us don't grumble out loud, we just silently keep a ledger. We track what we've given up, how long we've served, how hot the day has felt, and we measure it against what other people seem to be getting for less. That ledger feels like fairness, but it's really the evil eye Jesus names in the parable, an eye that can't see the beauty of the master's generosity because it's too fixed on the payment. The question underneath it all is simple and searching: are you serving because you've earned a seat at the table, or because grace already gave you one?
