Words Stand

Pastor Jamie Self - 10/25/2026

In this sermon from Luke 21:29-38, Pastor Jamie Self closes out the last public teaching of Jesus by taking us back to Daniel 7, where the throne room of the Ancient of Days becomes a courtroom and the Son of Man coming on the clouds is given dominion over every nation. Jesus does not give His disciples the date of His return, but He gives them a guarantee: heaven and earth will pass away, but His words will not pass away. Pastor Jamie shows that the real danger is a heavy heart, weighed down either by numbing ourselves through drunkenness and entertainment or by trying to control everything through the cares of this life, which are two strategies with the same desire to save ourselves. The only way to stay awake and stand before the Son of Man is to beg for a strength outside of ourselves, trusting the Judge who was judged in our place, raised again, and is coming back.

Weekly Reflection

“Heaven and earth will pass away. What will stand? His words. His words won't pass away”
Most of us don't think of ourselves as people who are trying to save ourselves. But at the end of a hard day we reach for something to make us numb, and at 3 a.m. we lie awake trying to control what we can't. Jesus says both of these weigh the heart down and put us to sleep, and they come from the same place: a quiet belief that if anything is going to be fixed, we have to fix it. The words of Jesus stand when everything else passes away, and they call us to stop running, stay awake, and beg Him for a strength we don't have, so that we can stand before the Son of Man who was judged in our place.

This Week’s Challenge:
What's my numbing agent of choice, and what care of this life am I trying to control? One night this week, when you reach for the remote, the phone, or the glass, set it down for ten minutes instead. Name the care that's weighing on you, and pray Luke 21:36 back to God, asking Him for the strength you don't have.
